Nana Ama Idun-Sam: When Body is Struggling to Hit the ‘Stop Bleeding’ Button
Nana Ama Idun-Sam, Research Intern at Global Health and Infectious Diseases Group, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“World Hemophilia Day – 17/04/2026
Ever had a small cut and thought, ‘Okay… that’s bleeding a bit too confidently’?
Now imagine your body struggling to hit the ‘stop bleeding’ button.
That’s hemophilia.
It’s not that people with hemophilia bleed faster – they simply bleed longer.
The issue lies in missing clotting factors – the body’s natural ‘repair team’ responsible for sealing injuries.
In hemophilia, that team is either understaffed or delayed.
Bleeding can occur internally – especially into joints – leading to pain and long-term damage if not properly managed.
It was an honor to be invited by New FM, Impact Media to speak on this today in recognition of World Hemophilia Day – an opportunity to highlight not just the science, but the real-life impact of this condition.
The encouraging part?
With modern treatments like clotting factor replacement therapy, many individuals with hemophilia can live full, active lives.
Also worth noting: Hemophilia isn’t exclusively a ‘male condition.’ Women and girls can experience symptoms too – and are often underdiagnosed.
So today, beyond the science, it’s about awareness, equity, and ensuring that no one is left behind when it comes to care.
To say the least, everyone deserves a body that knows when to say: ‘Alright, that’s enough bleeding for today.'”
