Sulekha Chandra: Driving Stroke Awareness and Prevention Through Community Education in Navi Mumbai
Sulekha Chandra, Founder and CEO of Gyan Paradise, shared on LinkedIn:
”Recently I had an opportunity to moderate an awareness session regarding Brain Strokes organized by Spark Avenue Media in association with Taloja Manufacturers Association, Moneyness Investments and RMB MMR.
Over 50 leaders attended and addressed by leading neurologist of Navi Mumbai: Dr. Aarti Kulkarni and Dr. Dikpal Jhadav.
Being someone who has first hand experienced the after effects of a brain stroke owing to cerebral infection, I shared how personal and social life gets deeply impacted when there is a loss of certain motor or cognitive function and not only that, a person with brain stroke (which can happen due to multiple reasons) creates a huge financial, physical and mental stress for the family.
So, let’s spread this message for building a healthy nation.
Following important guidelines and information was shared which every individual must know and share with family, colleagues and friends:
1. Remember BE FAST Framework for identifying symptoms of a stroke:
- Balance – Sudden loss of coordination
- Eyes – Vision abnormality
- Face – Drooping (complete your note: F = Face)
- Arm – Weakness (A = Arm)
- Speech – Slurred speech
- Time – Immediate medical action
Key Insight: Awareness plus reaching the right hospital on time saves brain function.
2. Look for Stroke Ready hospitals and clinics for immediate preventive interventions
Thrombolytic therapy
Clot-dissolving drugs injected into blood vessels
LVO (Large Vessel Occlusion)
Blockage in major brain arteries (more severe strokes)
Carotid treatment
To restore blood flow to the brain
Stroke-ready hospitals / clinics
Specialized centers for rapid stroke management
3. Critical Do’s and Don’ts
- Never stop blood thinners without doctor’s advice
- Golden time is crucial (early treatment = better recovery)
- Always go to a specialized stroke center
4. Post-Stroke Complications
- Parkinsonism symptoms
- Psychosis / hallucinations
- Emotional stress and mental health issues
5. Rehabilitation and Therapies available
- Mirror Therapy – Helps regain motor function
- Active regression / rehabilitation exercises
- Botox Therapy – For muscle stiffness/spasticity
Memory management and cognitive training at specialized Neuro Physiotherapy centres.
6. Preventive and Supportive Health Factors
Vitamin B12 – Essential for nerve health. Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is crucial for brain health, acting as a key nutrient for nerve insulation (myelin production), DNA synthesis, and neurotransmitter function. It prevents cognitive decline, memory loss, and brain atrophy.
One must go for Brain related tumor and cancer detection and Prioritize proper sleep
7. The worst fast food highlighted by Dr. Dikpal was Tomatosauce
I express deep gratitude to Sadanand Subramanian for taking Brain Stroke Awareness as a part of CSR activity, to CA Sunil Mistry for anchoring the session, to Ms. Sudipta Chattoraj, Shrishti Sustainable Collections for the wonderful mementoes.”
