Shayla Kassam: Canadian Stroke Consortium’s Climate and Health Sustainability Policy is Officially Live Now
Shayla Kassam, Research Fellow at Brain Climate Equity Collaborative (Brain-CE Collab), shared Brain Climate Equity Collaborative‘s post on LinkedIn:
”It is with great pleasure that I can announce our official publication of the Canadian Stroke Consortium‘s Climate and Health Sustainability Policy!
Grateful to collaborate with an incredible team of co-authors, Philip Barber, Dylan Blaquiere, and Keith Sivakumar, on this important work.
Proud to contribute, even in a small way, to a growing movement focused on advancing sustainability in stroke care across Canada.”
Brain Climate Equity Collaborative shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Phil A. Barber et al, published in The Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences, adding:
”Another proud moment for Brain-CE and for the science connecting brain health to the climate emergency!
Our board member Dr. Philip Barber, Dr. Keithan Sivakumar and Brain-CE fellow Shayla Kassam are co-authors on a newly published paper in the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences:
Canadian Stroke Consortium Climate and Health Sustainability Policy
The paper outlines the CSC’s commitment to embedding sustainability across stroke care.
From fossil fuel divestment and green meetings to research funding and climate-resilient clinical innovation.
It’s a meaningful step forward for neurological care and planetary health in Canada.
This work doesn’t end with this paper, rather we’re bringing this work to the big stage!
At the Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation Congress 2026, Brain-CE is proud to be present:
Climate Emergency: Protecting Brain Health
Tuesday, May 26, 2026 | 2:00-4:00 PM MST
This multidisciplinary session, co-chaired by Dr. Philip Barber and Dr. Keithan Sivakumar will bring together leading voices across neurology, pediatric brain health, and health systems to explore how the climate crisis is reshaping brain health and what we can do about it.
Brain-CE’s own Dr. Keithan Sivakumar and Muskaan Muse Laroyia will be presenting on adult brain health and the climate-brain health connection, sharing collaborative work from our team.
The full session runs:
- 2:00 PM — Climate change and health (Philip Barber)
- 2:20 PM — Fossil fuel pollution and pediatric brain health (Kirsten Sjonnesen)
- 2:40 PM — Brain health and climate: adults — Brain-CE collab (Keith Sivakumar and Muse Laroyia)
- 3:10 PM — Preparing health systems for climate emergencies (Bhavini Makwana)
- 3:30 PM — Panel discussion
The climate crisis is a brain health crisis.
We’re honoured to be part of the growing movement making this connection visible in research, policy, and clinical care.”
