Stephen Bailey: Saving Lives Before Birth with Intrauterine Transfusions
Stephen Bailey, Media and PR Manager at NHS Blood and Transplant, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Had some great help from donors and mum Maisie to share the story of our intrauterine transfusions today, here seen in The Times.
These are blood transfusions given when the baby is in the womb.
Only about one in 10,000 of the units we send to hospitals are used for these transfusions.
The donors pictured are two of our joint record holders, for having three of their donations each used in this way.
Mum’s baby Arthur had his life saved from this type of transfusion.
I think a strong personal story, some stats, and unusual medicine, will keep generating media coverage for a long time to come.”
