Shek Sady Khan: Addressing the Silent Burden of Venous Thromboembolism in Bangladesh

Shek Sady Khan, Medical Affairs and Strategic Initiatives Manager at Servier in Bangladesh, shared on LiknkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Public Health Challenges, adding:

”I’m pleased to share that my MPH thesis has now been published in Public Health Challenges (Wiley Online Library):

This work is particularly meaningful to me – not just as an academic milestone, but as a personal journey.

Completing an MPH while working full-time came with significant challenges, especially during data collection and final thesis preparation.

Despite these constraints, I remained committed to addressing a topic that I believe deserves far greater attention in our region.

My research focused on Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) – a condition encompassing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).

VTE is a major, yet often under-recognized, cause of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide.

Evidence suggests that a large proportion of hospitalized patients are at risk, yet appropriate prophylaxis remains underutilized, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

In Bangladesh and across much of South Asia, there is still limited epidemiological data on VTE prevalence, and awareness regarding risk assessment and thromboprophylaxis practices remains suboptimal.

This gap in both data and practice was the key motivation behind my thesis.

My goal was simple: to contribute even a small piece of evidence that can help drive awareness, inform clinical practice, and encourage further research in this neglected area.

I am also honored that this work has been published in a Q2-ranked journal, which reflects the scientific value and relevance of the study.

I hope this publication will encourage more clinicians, researchers, and policymakers in Bangladesh to prioritize VTE risk assessment and prevention as part of routine patient care.

I would be grateful for your thoughts, feedback, and any opportunities for collaboration in this important area of public health.”
