Vera Ignjatović: Why Is Thrombosis Research So Far Behind When It Comes to AI and Multi-Omics?
Vera Ignjatović, Founder and Managing Director at Ignis Innovations Pty Ltd, Principal Consultant of Translational Research at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in RPTH Journal, adding:
”I am excited to share a paper co-authored with my colleagues Steven Bruzek, MS, MB(ASCP), Grant Vestal, and Neil Goldenberg, MD PhD just published in RPTH Journal that asks a question our field (thrombosis) really needs to sit with.
Why is thrombosis research so far behind when it comes to AI and multi-omics?
Our paper focuses on:
- Multi-omics (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc.) is already transforming cancer and cardiovascular research.
- AI helps researchers make sense of massive, complex datasets that would otherwise be difficult to analyze.
- But in thrombosis research? Only FOUR studies have ever used AI with multi-omics.
That gap represents a problem, but also a great opportunity!
Blood clots kill.
Deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and stroke are not rare events, particularly not in adults, and hospitalized children.
We have the tools to better predict, diagnose, and treat blood clots.
We are simply not (yet) using them broadly in this field.
In this paper, we are calling on the thrombosis community to step up.
Specifically, more collaboration, more training, more data sharing, and more investment in the next generation of researchers who can bridge the gap between biology and data science.
I am genuinely passionate about this space.”
