Tanmay Banerjee: Laboratory Error Safety in Hematology Testing
Tanmay Banerjee, Lab Technologist, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Laboratory Error Safety in Hematology Testing
Even a small laboratory error in hematology testing can directly affect patient diagnosis and treatment decisions. That is why quality control and safety protocols are not optional, they are essential.
Common Causes of Errors in Hematology Testing:
- Wrong patient identification
- Improper sample collection
- Hemolyzed or clotted samples
- Incorrect anticoagulant ratio
- Delay in sample processing
- Instrument calibration issues
- Manual reporting mistakes
How to Reduce Laboratory Errors:
- Proper patient labeling and verification
- Following standard sample collection procedures
- Regular internal and external quality control
- Routine analyzer maintenance and calibration
- Staff training and competency assessment
- Double-checking abnormal or critical values
- Maintaining proper turnaround time (TAT)
In hematology, accuracy is more than just a number on a report. It is about patient safety, trust, and better clinical decisions.
As laboratory professionals, our responsibility starts before analysis and continues until the final report reaches the clinician.”
