Ali AlBahar: Why Blood Groups Matter

Ali AlBahar, Transfusion Medicine Specialist, Hematology and Blood Transfusion Researcher (MSc) at Ministry of Health Saudi Arabia, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Not all blood is the same…

…and that difference can save – or cost – a life.

What looks identical under the microscope can be completely different immunologically.

In transfusion medicine, we don’t match blood by appearance — we match it by antigens, antibodies, and clinical context.

  • Antigens define identity
  • Antibodies create risk
  • Compatibility prevents harm
  • Precision supports safety

A compatible unit is NOT chosen by blood type alone.

It requires:

  • Immunohematology
  • Patient history
  • Laboratory testing
  • Clinical judgment

Blood groups are not just labels – they are the language of safe transfusion.”
