Spelile Mutupira: Hemostasis – How the Body Stops Bleeding Naturally
Spelile Mutupira, Medical Laboratory Technologist, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Hemostasis: How the Body Stops Bleeding Naturally
Every time we get injured, the body activates an incredible defense mechanism called Hemostasis — the process that prevents excessive blood loss and begins healing.
It happens in 5 major stages:
- Vascular Spasm
The injured blood vessel immediately constricts (narrows) to reduce blood flow. Think of it as the body’s first emergency response. - Platelet Plug Formation
Platelets rush to the injury site, stick to the damaged area, and clump together to form a temporary plug. - Coagulation (Blood Clotting)
Clotting factors in the blood activate a cascade that converts fibrinogen into fibrin threads, creating a stable clot to seal the wound. - Clot Retraction and Repair
The clot shrinks, pulling the wound edges together while tissue healing begins. - Fibrinolysis
Once healing is complete, the body dissolves the clot to restore normal blood flow.
Hemostasis is more than stopping bleeding—it’s a perfect balance between clot formation and clot removal.
As laboratory and healthcare professionals, understanding this process is essential in diagnosing bleeding disorders, thrombosis, and monitoring patient health.”
