Giant Platelets

Giant platelets are abnormally large platelets, usually equal to or larger than red blood cells (RBCs).

They are commonly associated with disorders affecting blood coagulation and may contribute to abnormal bleeding tendencies.

This condition can be found in several diseases and disorders, including:

  • Myeloproliferative disorders: A group of diseases in which the bone marrow produces excessive blood cells.
  • Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP): An autoimmune disorder causing platelet destruction and thrombo cytopenia.
  • Bernard–Soulier syndrome: A congenital disorder characterized by giant platelets and impaired platelet function.
  • Gray platelet syndrome: A rare inherited platelet disorder in which platelets appear gray due to deficiency of alpha granules.
  • May–Hegglin anomaly: An inherited disorder associated with giant platelets and abnormal white blood cell inclusions.”
