Seema Dawood: When Elevated Platelets Signal a Myeloproliferative Neoplasm
Seema Dawood, Medical Laboratory Technologist at The Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Essential Thrombocythemia (ET)
A myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) characterized by excessive platelet production in the bone marrow, resulting in persistent thrombocytosis.
Key Features of ET Platelet count – 450,000/µL
- Frequently – 1,000,000/µL
- Giant / Large Platelets are commonly seen
- Platelet anisocytosis may be present
- RBC and WBC morphology are usually normal
Major Complications
- Thrombosis
- Hemorrhage, even in patients with extremely high platelet counts
ET Differs from Other Conditions
- Giant platelets are more prominent in Essential Thrombocythemia than in Myelo dysplastic Syndrome (MDS)
- Unlike Reactive Thrombocytosis, ET is a primary bone marrow disorder.”
