Nicolas Hubacz: Mapping the Brain’s Mesoscopic Vascular Infrastructure
Nicolas Hubacz, Research and Clinical Products Business Development Manager at Magstim, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The Blood Vessel Architecture Beneath the Cortex.
A remarkable new preprint has produced the first whole-cortex map of the brain’s mesoscopic vascular network, the penetrating blood vessels that dive from the cortical surface deep into the tissue and supply neurons with oxygen and nutrients.
Using the Big Brain atlas and custom detection and tracing algorithms, researchers reconstructed this previously underexplored vascular architecture across the entire human cortex.
What they found is striking:
- Blood vessel density is not uniform across the cortex.
- Different brain regions show distinct vascular architectures.
- These vascular patterns align closely with classical cortical boundaries.
- High-resolution histology can be repurposed to reveal entirely new anatomical insights.
What’s the Importance?
Every thought, perception, and action depends on a constant supply of oxygen and glucose.
Mapping how blood vessels are organized at this intermediate scale provides a new foundation for understanding how the brain meets its enormous metabolic demands.
This work also creates an important reference for validating emerging MRI techniques designed to visualize the human cerebrovascular system in living brains.
The result is one of the most detailed views yet of the brain’s internal vascular infrastructure, opening new possibilities for studying aging, stroke, dementia, and other neurological disorders.
Note: This study is currently available as a preprint and has not yet undergone peer review.
