Amro Al-Manasrah: Coronary Reperfusion Injury Beyond Large-Vessel Occlusion
Amro Al-Manasrah, Surgeon, Allumni of Hebron University, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Joanne L. Mitchell et al, published in Basic Research in Cardiology, adding:
”Recently read a preclinical study comparing anti-platelet and anti-thrombin strategies in ischemia–reperfusion injury of the coronary microcirculation in both healthy and diabetic models.
The study highlights that myocardial injury after reperfusion is not only driven by large-vessel thrombosis, but also by microvascular dysfunction involving platelets, fibrin, and inflammatory cell recruitment.
Importantly, it emphasizes that in metabolic disease such as diabetes, microcirculatory injury becomes less responsive to standard antithrombotic strategies, underscoring the complexity of reperfusion injury beyond epicardial artery reopening.
A valuable insight into the evolving concept of ‘thrombo-inflammation’ in acute myocardial infarction.”
