Selina Marwa: Strengthening Sickle Cell Disease Prevention and Care in Africa

Selina Marwa, Program Officer, Division of Non Communicable Diseases (DNCD) at Ministry of Health Kenya, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Honoured to have participated this week in the Continental Launch and Validation Meeting of the Africa CDC Continental Plan for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and other inherited Blood Disorders in Kampala, Uganda.

A landmark step toward strengthening prevention, early detection, comprehensive care, and sustainable health systems for SCD across Africa.

The discussions brought together governments, advocates, researchers, and partners from across the continent to shape a unified African response to SCD and other inherited blood disorders.

With Africa carrying over 75percent of the global burden of SCD, this strategic plan presents an important opportunity to accelerate political commitment, strengthen newborn screening, improve access to hydroxyurea and essential commodities, enhance workforce capacity, and build stronger data and surveillance systems.

Delighted by the strong emphasis on integration of SCD services into primary healthcare and UHC platforms, sustainable financing, research, innovation, and African-led solutions that translate to stronger health systems.

The message was clear- Tackling Sickle cell Disease requires minimal financing for prevention and early detection, a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach is needed to ensure multisectoral collaboration, and our data speaks for itself, action is needed today!!

Grateful to Africa CDC and partners for driving this important agenda forward.

Kenya through the Division of Cancer and NCDs, Ministry of Health, Kenya is committed to continued collaboration in advancing SCD prevention and care.”
