Saja Abo Thyab: How MDS Can Progress to AML
Saja Abo Thyabb, Medical Laboratory Science Student, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Inside the bone marrow, blood cells are constantly being produced in a highly organized process.
But when genetic mutations disrupt this balance, serious hematological disorders can begin to develop.
Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) represents ineffective and abnormal blood cell production inside the marrow.
Over time, these abnormal cells may accumulate additional mutations and progress into Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a highly aggressive disease characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of immature blast cells.
On the other hand, Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) develops through a different molecular mechanism involving the Philadelphia chromosome and BCR-ABL fusion gene, leading to uncontrolled myeloid cell proliferation.
Although AML, CML, and MDS differ in pathogenesis and progression, they remain interconnected through the disruption of normal hematopoiesis within the bone marrow.
What makes hematology remarkable is that microscopic cellular changes and molecular abnormalities can reveal the entire story of disease progression long before it becomes clinically apparent.”
