Alejandro González Veliz: Why Cardiovascular Prevention Matters More Than Intervention
Alejandro González Veliz, Interventional Cardiologist at Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Your heart disease risk does not begin the day symptoms appear.
It often starts silently, years earlier.
As cardiologists, one of the most important things we wish people understood is this:
Prevention is far more powerful than treatment.
Modern medicine can open blocked arteries, implant stents, and treat heart attacks — but protecting your arteries before damage occurs will always be the best strategy.
Many cardiovascular diseases progress quietly:
- High blood pressure
- High LDL cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Chronic stress
- Smoking
- Poor sleep
- Sedentary lifestyle
Most of these conditions can damage the vascular system long before chest pain appears.
That’s why regular check-ups matter.
A simple evaluation can identify risk factors early and help prevent future complications.
Exercise is also medicine.
Regular physical activity improves endothelial function, blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and overall cardiovascular health.
And the most important habits are not extreme habits — they are sustainable ones.
Small daily choices repeated consistently over time can completely change your cardiovascular future:
- Better nutrition
- Better sleep
- Smoking cessation
- Regular movement
- Stress management
- Medication adherence when needed
Your arteries remember everything.
But they can also heal when healthier habits begin.
Prevention is not about fear.
It’s about giving your heart the best chance to stay healthy for decades.”
