Nagendra Sungala: International Clinical Trials Day Validates the Work of Our Hematology Clinical Trials Unit

Nagendra Sungala, Director of Clinical Haematology at SWSLHD, NSW Health, shared South Western Sydney Local Health District’s post on LinkedIn:

“I was excited to share my thoughts about our haematology clinical trials unit on International Clinical Trials Day.

There are so many to thank for the progress our trials unit has made including expansion to Campbelltown and Bankstown Hospitals to bring the newer therapies closer to patient’s home.

We are particularly grateful to all our patients who participate in the clinical trials taking the risk for the benefit of our future patients.

I thank all the investigators, research nurses, research coordinators, data entry staff, lab scientists, pharmacists, start up and finance teams for their work.

The International Clinical Trials Day validates their work and improve morale and institutional support.”

South Western Sydney Local Health Distric shared a post on LinkedIn:

“On International Clinical Trials Day, we celebrate the people who turn research into hope including Dr Nag Sungala and our Haematology Clinical Research Unit (HCRU).

In 2020, the HCRU had just five staff and four clinical trials, forcing many patients to travel outside the District for innovative therapies. Recognising this barrier for patients, Dr Sungala led a sustained program of investment and expansion to embed research within everyday clinical care.

Since then, the Unit has grown to 40 staff, supporting more than 25 active trials across all haematology subspecialties and across Liverpool, Campbelltown and Bankstown Hospitals.

This transformation means:

  • Patients can now access world class therapies without leaving the District
  • Trial availability spans the full spectrum of haematological diseases
  • Equity is at the centre of the research program

The HCRU also continues to strengthen collaboration and patient centred care, partnering with multidisciplinary teams, national and international research groups, universities and community organisations to deliver safe, coordinated and compassionate clinical trials.

Today, we celebrate the Unit’s leadership, dedication and impact not only in advancing cancer research, but in transforming what is possible for our community.”
