Mohamed Al Nasef: A Cohort Analysis of Increased Perioperative Thrombosis Risk in Neonates with TGA
Mohamed Al Nasef, Pediatric Intervention Cardiologist at American Mission Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Progress in Pediatric Cardiology, adding:
“Happy to share our recent study evaluating thrombosis risk in children with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) undergoing corrective cardiac surgery.
Dr Nasser and our team have evaluated a cohort of 217 patients, children with TGA demonstrated a significantly higher rate of perioperative thrombosis compared with other congenital heart diseases (16.2% vs 3.8%).
Balloon atrial septostomy (BAS) was strongly associated with thrombotic events, with many occurring even before definitive surgery.
These findings highlight the uniquely vulnerable physiology of TGA neonates and the importance of heightened vigilance and future thromboprophylaxis strategies in this high-risk population.”
