“Is this the future of lipid-lowering therapy?

Exciting insights from EAS 2026 in Athens:

The presented data on PCSK9 targeting, base editing, and epigenetic approaches demonstrate how rapidly lipid therapy is evolving.

From traditional LDL–C lowering therapies, small molecules, mAbs, and RNAi to potential ‘one-and-done’ treatments, we may be witnessing a true paradigm shift:

  • durable LDL-C reduction after a single treatment
  • new approaches to improve adherence and persistence
  • epigenetic regulation instead of permanent genetic modification
  • impressive preclinical and early clinical data

What I found particularly fascinating was the discussion around whether we are moving from chronic treatment strategies toward long-lasting molecular interventions.

At the same time, important questions remain:

  • long-term safety
  • reversibility
  • cost and accessibility
  • ethical considerations of genetic interventions

Still, the direction is becoming increasingly clear:

cardiovascular prevention could be fundamentally redefined over the coming years.
