The Risk Factors and Optimal Prevention Strategies of VTE in Sickle Cell Disease – RPTH Journal

RPTH Journal shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Neha Bhasin et al, adding:

Risk factors for venous thromboembolism in sickle cell disease

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is well known to increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE),but who is most at risk, and how often does VTE recur?

A new retrospective study in RPTH examined 719 individuals with SCD over a 10-year period to answer these questions.

Key findings from 64 patients who developed VTE:

  •  8.9% of the cohort developed at least one VTE
  • VTE recurrence rate: 31%

Major risk factors:

  • History of VTE
  • History of stroke
  • ≥6 hospitalisations in 12 months

Additional risk factors: hormonal therapy, smoking , and central venous catheter use

Prospective studies are needed to validate these risk factors and evaluate optimal prevention strategies.”
