Umut Kocabas: Current Practice and Guideline Adherence on Cancer-Associated Thrombosis in Turkey
Umut Kocabas, Cardiologist, Associate Professor at Başkent University, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Clinical Medicine, adding:
”Excited to share our latest research article published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine: ‘Adherence of Oncologists and Cardiologists to Venous Thromboembolic Disease Prevention and Treatment Guidelines in Cancer Patients: A Cross-Sectional Survey from Turkey’
Our study investigated how closely oncologists and cardiologists in Turkey follow international guidelines for preventing and treating cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT).
Key Insights from our Findings:
- Where we succeed: There is strong alignment with international guidelines in perioperative and inpatient VTE prophylaxis, as well as acute treatment.
- Where we can improve: Significant implementation gaps persist in routine VTE risk stratification and primary prophylaxis for ambulatory cancer patients.
- A unified clinical approach: No significant differences were found between the practice patterns of oncologists and cardiologists, revealing a highly shared interdisciplinary baseline.
- The path forward: A striking 94.1% of clinicians expressed a clear desire to update their knowledge. This highlights an urgent need for structured multidisciplinary education, integration of validated risk scoring tools into clinical workflows, and nationally adapted guidelines.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Uğur Önsel Türk and the entire research team for their invaluable collaboration and dedication to this study!”
