Alejandro González Veliz: Why Recovery After Myocardial Infarction Does Not End at Discharge
Alejandro González Veliz, Interventional Cardiologist at Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Yasunori Suematsu et al., published in European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, adding:
“Surviving a myocardial infarction is only the beginning.
This large multicenter study of more than 4,400 patients showed that cardiac rehabilitation significantly improves long-term outcomes after MI.
Inpatient cardiac rehabilitation reduced:
- Major cardiovascular events by 25%
- All-cause mortality by 28%
And when rehabilitation continued after discharge:
- Major cardiovascular events fell by 36%
- Mortality decreased by 42%
- Cardiovascular readmissions dropped by 35%
The message is simple:
Opening the artery saves the heart. Cardiac rehabilitation helps save the future.
Every patient recovering from MI deserves the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive rehabilitation program.”
