Heparin Beyond Anticoagulation in Sepsis – JTH
Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Patricia C Liaw et al, adding:
“The evolving role of heparin in sepsis: therapeutic potential in the age of immunothrombosis
Sepsis is marked by immunothrombosis, where inflammation, coagulation, endothelial injury, platelet activation, and NET formation drive both large and small vessel occlusion.
Heparin has re-emerged as a candidate because its actions reach beyond anticoagulation to anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and NET-modulating effects.
Trial evidence is limited, and COVID-19 data hint at benefit early and possible harm in advanced disease.”
