Alejandro González Veliz: Not All Calories Are Created Equal

Alejandro González Veliz,  Interventional Cardiologist at Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Luigina Guasti et al., published in European Heart Journal, adding:

“Not all calories are created equal.

The 2026 ESC Clinical Consensus highlights that ultra-processed foods may contribute to cardiovascular disease beyond their nutritional composition.

For cardiologists, assessing UPF intake should become part of routine lifestyle evaluation—alongside blood pressure, lipids, diabetes, and smoking.

The future of preventive cardiology isn’t just about nutrients.

It’s about food quality and food processing.

What changes have you started recommending to your patients?

European Heart Journal 2026.”
