“One of the things I’ve learned after years of helping hospitals build VTE programs is this:
Patients rarely see the hardest work.
And they shouldn’t.
Patients shouldn’t have to wonder who’s coordinating their care. They shouldn’t leave the hospital uncertain about what comes next or struggle to navigate a fragmented system.
They should experience confidence.
A timely diagnosis.
A coordinated treatment plan.
Access to the medications they need.
Clear follow-up.
Creating that experience doesn’t happen by accident.
It takes months—and often years—of bringing people together around a shared purpose.
Building trust across specialties.
Educating clinicians.
Measuring outcomes.
Refining pathways.
Learning from every patient.
Much of that work is invisible.
And that’s exactly how it should be.
Because when a healthcare system is working well, patients don’t notice the system.
They notice that they felt cared for.
That’s why I’ve come to believe the value of a VTE Center of Excellence isn’t measured by the number of designated centers. It’s measured by how many organizations commit to building a culture of continuous improvement.
A designation recognizes the work that’s been done.
A partnership helps sustain the work that’s still ahead.
That kind of excellence isn’t designated.
It’s built one partnership at a time.”
