Sujan Sivasubramaniyam: Three Decades of Progress for Children with Haemophilia in Morocco

Sujan Sivasubramaniyam, Senior Director, Head of Global Patient Advocacy and Policy, Corporate and External Affairs at CSL, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Thirty years ago, a child born with haemophilia in Morocco faced a very different future than a child born today. This image captures that contrast.

On one side is Melud, living with the consequences of a time when awareness, diagnosis, access to specialist care and treatment were limited. As a teenager, he lost his leg to preventable complications and now lives with a lifelong disability. Yet today, he has transformed personal hardship into powerful advocacy, working with the Moroccan Association of Haemophiliacs to educate younger generations and drive change so others can receive the care that was never available to him.

On the other side is a young child benefiting from prophylactic treatment, with the chance to run, play and dream of a future full of possibilities, free from the burden of regular bleeds, premature joint damage and disability.

During our visit to Morocco with the World Federation of Hemophilia, Dirk Hoheisel and I heard stories that were both inspiring and humbling. They highlighted real progress and how access to treatment can change the course of a life, while reminding us that significant gaps remain. More than 80% of people with bleeding disorders worldwide still have little or no access to effective treatment.

Experiences like these reaffirm CSL’s commitment to our longstanding partnership with the WFH Humanitarian Aid Program and the global bleeding disorders community. Together, we believe humanitarian aid can be more than a response to urgent need. It can be a catalyst for lasting change, strengthening healthcare systems, improving diagnosis and education and helping countries build sustainable access to care for future generations.

Watch the first film in this Morocco series to hear these stories first hand and see the impact partnership, advocacy and access can make.”
