Jonathan Furniss: The Platelet Response That Helps Drive Tissue Repair
Jonathan Furniss, PhD Researcher at The University of Bristol, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Blood VTH, adding:
“If we know two things about platelets, it’s that they ARE definitely a cell (don’t let anyone tell you otherwise) and that they are far more complicated than just ‘clotting cells’.
Our understanding of how platelets interact with leukocytes has boomed but there is still confusion about whether these aggregates are ‘good’ or ‘bad’.
The term thromboinflammation is frequently used to describe the ‘bad’, so we only thought it fair that there should be a word for the ‘good’!!
We have just published a review in American Society of Hematology’s journal, Blood VTH, coining the novel term ‘thromborepair’ to describe this process.
We also discuss the major roles that platelet-leukocyte interactions have in promoting tissue repair, post-injury.
