Augustina Isioma Ikusemoro: Before You Transfuse, Think PBM
Augustina Isioma Ikusemoro, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine Specialist at Sharjah Blood Transfusion and Research Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Before You Transfuse, Think PBM!
The best transfusion decision is not always to transfuse.
During Patient Blood Management Awareness Week (2–6 November 2026), let’s champion a healthcare approach that puts the patient — not the blood product — at the centre of clinical decisions.
- Detect and treat anaemia early.
- Prevent and minimize blood loss.
- Make evidence-based, patient-specific transfusion decisions.
Blood transfusion saves lives when clinically indicated. Patient Blood Management helps ensure it is used appropriately, safely and effectively.
The question is not simply, ‘Does this patient need blood?’ but ‘How can we best optimize this patient’s blood health?’
What is the biggest barrier to implementing PBM in your healthcare setting?”
