Aleksandar Sič: The Endothelium and Cardiovascular Toxicity in Blood Cancers

Aleksandar Sič, Review Editor at Frontiers, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Diseases, adding:

“I have just published another interesting paper with the team from North Central Bronx Hospital and colleagues from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Cardiovascular toxicity in patients with blood cancers is often explained mainly through damage to the heart muscle.

We focused instead on the endothelium and its possible role in connecting several complications that are usually discussed separately.

The paper also explains how the malignancy itself, anticancer treatment, immune activation and stem cell transplantation can damage blood vessels and contribute to hypertension, thrombosis, coronary microvascular dysfunction and myocardial dysfunction.

We also discuss whether blood markers of endothelial injury could help identify patients at risk earlier.
