I am delighted to share our latest research article, now published in PLOS ONE:
‘Therapeutic plasma exchange across multiple organ systems in an Egyptian tertiary center: A seven-year real-world cohort study.’
This seven-year real-world cohort study included 221 patients undergoing therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) at Zagazig University Hospitals and provides valuable evidence on its indications, effectiveness, safety, and predictors of outcomes across renal, neurologic, hematologic, and metabolic disorders.
Key findings:
- Overall clinical response: 77.9 percent
- Complete remission among responders: 93.0 percent
- Neurologic indications showed an 81.6 percent response rate
- Response exceeded 85 percent in autoimmune hemolytic anemia, hypersensitivity syndrome, and TTP
- Adverse events occurred in 37.2 percent, all mild-to-moderate, with no session termination
The study identifies important predictors of mortality and highlights the particularly valuable role of TPE in appropriate patient selection.
