Matthew Hazell: From Platelet Refractoriness to Protecting Transplanted Organs
Matthew Hazell, Consultant Clinical Scientist at NHS Blood and Transplant, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“From platelet refractoriness to protecting transplanted organs…
Next up at BBTS 2026, Colin Brown delivering the Kenneth Goldsmith Award Lecture, exploring the impact of HLA sensitisation across transfusion and solid organ transplantation.
A great demonstration of why HLA matching isn’t simply about matching whole molecules. Epitope matching can reveal important compatibility that conventional antigen matching may miss, helping improve access to effective HLA matched platelets, particularly for patients whose HLA types are poorly represented within donor panels.
The consequences extend beyond platelet refractoriness. In renal transplantation, transfusion associated HLA antibodies can become donor specific antibodies, with potentially significant consequences for graft survival. Colin highlighted how HLA matched red cell transfusion can help mitigate sensitisation risk in these patients.
And the challenge continues: increasingly diverse populations, complex red cell antibodies, limited compatible donors and growing interest from other specialties including cardiothoracics.
Matching smarter, not simply matching more.”
