Peter A. Everts։ Platelet Phenotype May Hold the Key to More Consistent PRP Therapy
Peter A. Everts, Senior Director Medical Affairs at Bioventus, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Clinical Medicine, adding:
”We are excited to share our new review in the Journal of Clinical Medicine: ‘Are Platelet Volume, Density, and the Homeostatic Blueprint the Missing Link in Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapies?’
PRP is used in orthopedics and sports medicine on a daily basis, yet outcomes stay inconsistent.
We argue that the field has focused heavily on platelet dosing, and not as much on PRP bioformulations and platelet phenotypes.
Larger, denser, younger platelets carry far more granular content, factors that actually drive repair.
Our recommendation: measure platelet indices (MPV, PDW, density) before preparing PRP, and use protocols that recover these denser, more reactive platelets—rather than treating platelet density as a fixed value.
We present this as a grounded hypothesis: the mechanistic links are well supported, but proving that high-MPV enrichment improves outcomes awaits prospective trials. That’s the work we hope this prompts.”
