Fatima Zahra: ASH Released New Guidelines on the Diagnosis of Iron Deficiency

“Hematology update:
The American Society of Hematology (ASH) recently released new guidelines on the diagnosis of iron deficiency, recommending higher serum ferritin thresholds :
- Children aged 9 months to 4 years: serum ferritin ≤ 20 ng/mL.
- Adults and menstruating or pregnant individuals: serum ferritin ≤ 30 ng/mL.
- High-risk groups (heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnant individuals with anemia): serum ferritin ≤ 50 ng/mL.
- Adults with inflammation (cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, infections): consider iron deficiency if serum ferritin < 100 ng/mL or fasting transferrin saturation < 20 percent.
