Sumyea Kabir: Jehovah’s Witnesses Update Their Position on Blood Components

Sumyea Kabir, Assistant Professor at Zainul haque Sikder Women’s Medical college and Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Major Update: Evolution of Jehovah’s Witnesses Policy on Blood Transfusions

A landmark policy adjustment was announced regarding religious doctrine and medical care.

Previous Doctrine vs. Updated Policy:

The Past Doctrine:

Historically, doctrine strictly prohibited allogeneic whole blood AND its four main primary components (red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets).

Voluntary acceptance of primary components previously resulted in religious disciplinary action/shunning.

The New Update:

  • Primary Components: Deciding whether to accept or donate red cells, white cells, plasma, or platelets is now an individual conscience decision.
  • Targeted Donation: Members may now choose to donate blood for component extraction to help others.
  • Whole Blood Excluded: Refusal of whole blood transfusions remains intact.
  • Privacy: Congregations will not interfere with or police an individual’s personal medical choices.”
