Michael Cahillane: Highlights From BBTS2026 in Glasgow
Michael Cahillane, Senior Research Scientist at Welsh Blood Service, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Another British Blood Transfusion Society Annual Conference done – and what a great few days it was!
I had a brilliant time at BBTS2026 in Glasgow. It was great to catch up with old acquaintances, meet plenty of new people and hear about the breadth of work happening across transfusion science.
I particularly enjoyed getting out of my usual areas of interest and attending some sessions I probably wouldn’t normally choose – I came away from several of them having learned something completely new and having my brain thinking in different directions.
It was also fantastic to see such a strong contingent from Welsh Blood Service.
There was some really diverse work represented, with WBS colleagues receiving recognition across several of the poster categories. This is a great reflection of the exciting range of work being undertaken across the organisation.
I was also fortunate to contribute to two sessions myself.
I gave a flash talk on the WBS Component Development and Research (CDR) work exploring human platelet lysate and then had something of a full-BBTS-circle moment in the Education session, reflecting on how BBTS’s Transfusion Science Practice (TSP) Specialist Certificate has helped shape my educational and career pathway.
Also had a few posters presented for good measure!
A busy few days, lots of conversations, plenty of learning and a good reminder of why I enjoy being part of the blood transfusion community.
