“Understanding peripheral artery disease in the modern era.
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease has been the leading cause of premature death in global populations over recent decades. Mortality statistics, most publications, and guidelines regarding atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease have traditionally focused on adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events and causes of death.
Although common risk factors appear similar across all subgroups of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, there are several crucial differences—including pathophysiological details and patterns of injury, as well as adherence to guideline-based recommendations.
