Gemma Postil: AI Tools in Modern Health Research
Gemma Postil, Education Co-Lead at the Temerty Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in npj Digital Medicine, adding:
”Many are using AI tools to assist, augment, and even automate health research. However, several of these tools are not explicitly designed for this purpose…
I am excited to share our Perspective in npj Digital Medicine: ‘Integrating artificial intelligence tools in health research.’
In this paper, our international team explored an important challenge: health research and data science do not always approach research questions, terminology, workflows, or evidence generation in the same way.
As AI tools are largely built within data science paradigms, these differences matter when they are applied to clinical and population health research.
We offer practical recommendations for researchers using AI-enabled tools, including breaking complex analyses into clearly defined and documented steps that reflect the disciplines traditional workflows and treating AI-generated analyses almost like a peer-review exercise.
One of my favourite ideas from the paper is that the goal should not be to outsource scientific reasoning to AI; rather, we should design research workflows where AI amplifies rigorous scientific output, ultimately verified by human researchers.
