Muhammad Ans: Emerging Trends and Disparities in PE-Related Mortality Among Patients With AF

Key Findings from Our CDC WONDER Study:
We analyzed Trends and Disparities in Mortality due to Pulmonary Embolism Among Adults With Atrial Fibrillation From 1999 to 2020, with additional COVID-19-era analysis through 2023.
- 5499 deaths were identified from 1999–2020.
- Mortality increased significantly after 2009, with an APC of 3.68 percent annually through 2020.
- Men had higher overall mortality than women (0.077 versus 0.065 per 100,000).
- Non-metropolitan areas had higher mortality than metropolitan areas (0.082 versus 0.063 per 100000).
- From the pre-COVID to post-COVID period, mortality increased by 31 percent overall, with the largest regional increase in the Northeast (plus 69.6 percent).
- 55.7 percent of deaths occurred in inpatient medical facilities.
Takeaway: PE-associated mortality among individuals with AF has shown a concerning upward trend, with notable geographic and urban–rural disparities and a sustained increase following the COVID-19 period.”
