“Field Visit to Akola Thalassemia Society Day Care Centre

Today, I had the opportunity to visit the Akola Thalassemia Society Day Care Centre
The visit gave me an opportunity to observe the functioning of the day care centre, understand its logistics and management, and interact with individuals living with thalassemia and their families.
Beyond the clinical aspects, the visit helped me appreciate the public health dimensions of thalassemia, including:
- The importance of prevention and screening
- Understanding the burden and prevalence of thalassemia
- Organisation and logistics of regular transfusion based care
- Continuity of care and patient support
- The importance of counselling and community awareness
Speaking directly with patients was particularly meaningful.
It offered perspectives that cannot be fully captured through textbooks or classroom discussions and reinforced the importance of integrating clinical care with prevention, counselling and health system strengthening.
A valuable field learning experience and an opportunity to better understand the realities of living with and managing thalassemia.”
