Kim Mahler: Human Platelet Lysate Outperforms FBS in MSC Expansion
Kim Mahler, Director, Business Development at Cytologics, shared post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Willem Delabie at al, published in Stem Cell Research and Therapy:
“In a 2025 comparison of five human platelet lysates, seven serum-free media (media with no animal serum) and FBS, MSCs expanded slowest in FBS.
The two media that grew MSCs fastest were sold as serum-free but contained human platelet and leukocyte proteins, so the authors reclassify them as platelet lysate. The true serum-free media that supported growth matched hPL, at about twice the cost per mL of medium.
The takeaway: hPL grew MSCs faster than FBS and cost about half as much per mL as the serum-free media, and a serum-free label did not predict the composition.
Check out the linked article for the evidence summary and study table.”
