Heghine Khachatryan: ITP Care in Low- and Middle-Income Countries-Challenges and Priorities
Heghine Khachatryan, Editor-in-Chief of Hemostasis Today, Head of Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis, adding:
“I am pleased to share new publication, ‘Immune Thrombocytopenia in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review’ published in Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis and now available on PubMed.
Bringing together 20 studies reporting 2,125 adult participants across nine countries, our review examines how local epidemiology, diagnostic resources and treatment availability shape ITP care.
The findings highlight several persistent challenges: infection-associated secondary ITP, prolonged corticosteroid exposure, limited access to newer therapies, and substantial effects on patients’ daily activities and emotional wellbeing.
In my view, the principal clinical implication is the need for locally adapted care pathways that combine diagnostic accuracy, timely access to effective treatment, and attention to quality of life. Reducing avoidable treatment toxicity should remain a central priority.
The evidence also requires careful interpretation: predominantly small observational studies and uneven geographical representation limit generalisability. Prospective, multicentre research from underrepresented settings is essential to strengthen future recommendations.
My sincere thanks to Jecko Thachil and co-authors for this international collaboration.”
