Shamee Shastry: New Handbook Highlights In-House Reagent Preparation for Transfusion Medicine
Shamee Shastry, Professor, Head of the Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Chapter published: In-house reagent preparation in immunohematology.
Reagents are the foundation of every screening, diagnostic and research test in the immunohematology laboratory.
Yet for many labs, especially in resource-limited settings, dependence on commercial reagents is a real constraint on cost and continuity.
The chapter makes the case that a number of reagents can be prepared in-house, safely and reliably, when backed by strong quality control and adherence to GMP and GLP principles:
- Reagent red cells: pooled ABO cells, screening and identification panels, rare antigen panels
- Plant-derived lectins: Anti-A1, Anti-H, Anti-T… etc
- Elution and adsorption reagents
- Enhancement media: PEG
- In-house antisera …and many more
Beyond cost-effectiveness, in-house preparation lets laboratories tailor reagents to specific testing needs, including rare antigen panels that are hard to source.

Congratulations, Dr. Parmatma Prasad Tripathi, and the entire editorial team on the successful release of Advances in Transfusion Medicine: A Practical Handbook.
Bringing together diverse expertise into one cohesive and meaningful academic resource is no small feat.
This book will serve as a valuable guide for practitioners, trainees and laboratories across the transfusion medicine community.
It was a privilege to contribute a chapter, and I’m grateful to the editors for their vision, dedication and meticulous coordination.
Wishing the book wide readership and lasting impact.”
