Mohamed Touhid Patel: Combining Microfluidics and SERS for Advanced Blood Analysis

Mohamed Touhid Patel, Doctoral Researcher at University of Birmingham, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Sensors and Actuators Reports, adding:

“Pleased to share our latest publication in Sensors and Actuators Reports (Elsevier | Scopus) – An Integrated Passive Microfluidic–SERS Platform for Label-Free Plasma Analysis from Whole Blood.

We developed a lab-on-a-chip platform integrating passive plasma separation with SERS, eliminating the need for centrifugation or external pumping.

Highlights:

  • 98.9% red blood cell removal.
  • 43.1% plasma recovery from just 100 µL of whole blood in approximately 5 minutes.
  • Strong Raman spectral agreement with conventionally prepared plasma (r = 0.96).
  • Promising proof-of-concept discrimination of actinic keratosis, with an AUC of 0.934

These findings demonstrate the potential of combining microfluidics, spectroscopy and machine learning for accessible, label-free molecular analysis.

My sincere thanks to my co-authors Daniel Nicol, Matteo Rochon Cocchiara and Jonathan J. Rickard for their contributions and collaboration.

Special thanks to Prof. Pola Goldberg Oppenheimer for her invaluable supervision, guidance and continued support throughout this research.”
