Nour Al-Mozain: What Does a Bathtub Have to Do with Hemoglobin S?
Nour Al-Mozain, Associate Professor at Alfaisal University, shared this post on LinkedIn:
“What does a bathtub have to do with hemoglobin S?
Today’s journal club explored a recent study asking: could the rate at which HbS rises help personalize red cell exchange intervals?
In 18 patients with HbSS, the rate varied nearly fourfold.
The authors proposed using each patient’s HbS rate of rise, post-exchange HbS, and target threshold to guide scheduling.
Faster rebounders may need earlier exchanges; slower rebounders may allow longer intervals.
A promising approach that still needs prospective validation.
This creative animation made the concept memorable: the water level represents HbS%, while the dripping tap illustrates its rise between exchanges.
Credit to our brilliant resident Ghada Alyami for bringing science to life!”
