Karina Carla Melo de Souza: Who Will Sustain Blood Stocks in the Future?

Karina Carla Melo de Souza, Quality Manager at Colsan – Blood Collection Beneficent Association, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Who will sustain blood stocks in the future?

This was the question that led me to HEMO 2026 to present one of our scientific papers, on the importance of blood donors aged 60 and over.

We analyzed 570,127 donations made between 2023 and 2025 and found a data that deserves attention: while the total number of donations grew by 2.4%, among donors 60+ this growth was 19.3%.

And look how current this discussion is! In 2026, the publication of Ordinance GM/MS No. 11,685 brought an important change to hemotherapy, allowing repeat donors over 70 years of age to continue donating, subject to medical evaluation.

Whenever we talk about the aging of the population, the discussion is usually focused on the challenges of health care. But we also need to look at how much these people continue to contribute to society.

Our seniors are not just people who need care.

They are people who also care, participate and save lives!

I also had the opportunity to present a second paper, this time on hand hygiene and patient safety.

The research involved 229 employees and used fluorescence to evaluate, in a practical and visual way, the hand hygiene technique. The results helped us identify points that need more attention and showed how we can make training more effective.

For those who work with Quality Management, it is very gratifying to see a routine activity transformed into research, generate knowledge and contribute to improving our practices.”
