Alexander Misono: Chronic Deep Vein Thrombosis and the Impact of Delayed Treatment

“We worry about deep vein thrombosis in the acute setting.
However, we must never forget that when left untreated or under treated deep vein thrombosis can turn into a debilitating chronic disease.
I am reminded of a very special case and my patient, Mark.
‘I was on a downward spiral of mobility,’ Mark said after a chronic deep vein thrombosis (clot) in his leg led to an ulcer that would not heal.
Although we diagnosed him with chronic deep vein thrombosis extending throughout his entire leg and into his pelvis, we felt that he was a candidate for a special type of mechanical thrombectomy to reestablish blood flow that simply hadn’t been there for decades.”
