Alexandros Makis: 20-year Cohort of 112 Children with Autoimmune Neutropenia
Alexandros Makis, Professor of Pediatrics/Pediatric Hematology at Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, University of Ioannina, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in British Journal of Haematology, adding:
“I am pleased to share our latest publication in the British Journal of Haematology.
In a 20-year cohort of 112 children with autoimmune neutropenia, we confirmed that it isn’t one condition — it’s three distinct phenotypes with very different paths: Primary autoimmune neutropenia — benign, resolving in nearly 19 months despite very low neutrophil counts.
Long-lasting neutropenia — strong familial autoimmunity, delayed resolution (nearly 67 months).
Late-onset neutropenia — multi-lineage lymphopenia, frequent ANA positivity and associated autoimmune disease, yet no severe infection-related hospitalisations.
A paradox explained by preserved humoral immunity.
These findings support phenotype-based stratification as a tool for improving clinical monitoring and management of childhood autoimmune neutropenia.
