Alison L. Bailey: Wearing Red to Raise Awareness of Women’s N1 Killer on National Go Red Day
Alison L. Bailey, Professor and Vice-Chair at West Virginia University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Today is National Go Red Day. We wear red to raise awareness of women’s No. 1 killer – cardiovascular disease. 1 in 3 women—our moms, sisters, wives, and friends—will die from cardiovascular disease. Yet, only 44% of women are aware of this. Go Red is an opportunity to raise awareness for all the women in your life.
Facts you may not know:
- Cardiovascular disease affects ALL women in some way.
- Cardiovascular disease includes heart attack, coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, heart failure, high blood pressure, and congenital heart disease.
- Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of NEW MOMS and accounts for over 1/3 of MATERNAL DEATHS.
- Less than 50% of women entering pregnancy in the United States have good heart health.
- Most cardiac and stroke events can be prevented through education and lifestyle changes, such as moving more, eating smart, and managing blood pressure.
At the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, we are working to improve our rural communities and bring cardiovascular care where you need it most.
Today we GO RED to increase awareness of heart disease in women, to be counted, and to be heard. Put on your RED, know your own numbers, and spread the word! ”
