Amira Khater: Key Updates on Pulmonary Embolism Management from AHA and ACC Guidelines
Amira Khater, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Sentara Healthcare, shared on LinkedIn:
“The AHA and ACC just released their first-ever joint guideline on acute pulmonary embolism, bringing clearer structure to how we diagnose and manage PE.
A few key updates that stood out to me:
- A new A–E classification system to better define PE severity and guide treatment
- DOACs remain first-line for most patients needing anticoagulation
- Advanced therapies like thrombolysis are reserved for higher-risk patients with clinical deterioration
- Greater emphasis on risk stratification and follow-up care
This is an important step toward more consistent, risk-based care—and highlights the ongoing role of the multidisciplinary team in improving outcomes for patients with PE.”
