Andrea Van Beek: Improving DOAC Adherence Saves Lives
Andrea Van Beek, Board of Directors of Anticoagulation Forum, National Certification Board for Anticoagulation Providers, shared on LinkedIn:
”We’ve reached the middle of National Blood Clot Awareness Month!
With our Clot Walk just days away, I’ve been reflecting on Antithrombotic Stewardship related to VTE and Stroke, and with that in mind, I wanted to share another Stewardship Spotlight
Missed doses equals major problems
According to Anticoagulation Forum’s hot-off-the-press Antithrombotic Stewardship Summit Report:
- 1 in 3 patients miss more than 20% of their DOAC doses
- Each 10% decrease in DOAC adherence is associated with 4% higher risk of stroke or systemic embolism
At our Visalia Medical Clinic / Adventist Health Anticoagulation and Thrombosis Service, we take time during EVERY visit to discuss missed doses, and practical strategies to prevent them from happening.
Small discussions equals big results plus healthier patients.
The details matter!
Tell me what you are doing to promote antithrombotic stewardship during blood clot awareness month
Together, we can change lives!!”
